The cigarette has a tube of e.g. paper down the middle, terminating ahead of the filter tip containing a substance which undergoes a phase change as it burns with the tobacco. This reduces the harmful combustion products. The substance can melt as the tobacco burns. It can be partly heat conductive to improve the efficiency. It may melt into small droplets which combine with the ash. It may form a single cake as it burns or melts. The tube may be formed by ring sections which may be connected by cellulose material. Adhesive which does not affect the flavour of the tobacco can be used. The substance may consist of a high heat conducting material combined with a material with a suitably high melting point.
