The cigarette has a paper or other material tube (1) down the middle, terminating at the filter tip (6). This tube can be a helically wound strip (9) and houses a series of regularly spaced spheres (3) or discs which divide it into separate compartments. The spheres can be hollow or solid, and can be made of heat conductive material. They undergo a phase change as the tobacco burns. They can be filled with a material which itself at least partly undergoes a phase change as the tobacco burns. The tube can contain separate short lengths of sleeve, or short cylinders closed one end, dividing it into compartments. An adhesive which does not harm the tobacco can be used - alternately, the sleeve may be corrugated. The twisting material may be relatively air impervious, and may be of cellulose containing material such as paper.
