The workpieces, esp. metal sheet or foil are stacked in a frame between pressure plates, possibly using several stacks sepd. from each other via intermediate pressure plates; and pressure is exerted via an adjustable clamp and by differences in the coeffts. of thermal expansion of the frame and clamp. The stack also includes a pressure-redn. plate, made e.g. of mild steel, which undergoes plastic deformation when the desired diffusion welding pressure is attained. The pref. device includes a U-shaped frame closed by a beam to form a cavity contg. stacks of the workpieces and plates, plus a clamp which consists of a pair of mating wedges. When the wedges are driven into the frame cavity the initial clamping pressure on the stack is increased. Used for welding thin, flat precision components together. The components may, e.g. have a complex shape produced by etching, and must be welded together with no plastic deformation so their exact dimensions are obtd. Such components are used in raster ink printers; in (electro)hydraulic control systems; or in fluidics.
