Alkali 2-hydroxyalkyl sulphonate prodn. - with low glycol content, from alkylene oxide and alkali bi:sulphite, then spray drying

Prodn. of mixts. of hydroxyalkyl sulphonates HO.CRH.SO3Z (I) (R are each H or aliphatic gp.; Z is alkali) and glycols HO.CRH.CRH.OH (II) contg. 0.6 wt.% (II) on (I) comprises first reacting the corresp. alkylene oxide (III) with ZHSO3 in the presence of solvents. The liq. reaction mixt. at 30-100 degrees C is then atomised under a pressure of 100-150 bar to droplets of mean dia. 1-100 mu m, and the droplets heated in air/or inert gas at 150-390 degrees C/0.05-2 bar. (I) are starting materials for textile auxiliaries and cleaners, e.g. domestic washing powders, liq. cleaners and soaps. Yields space-time yields and purity are improved, esp. the content of (II), which causes skin irritations and gives a hygroscopic prod., is lower than that in other processes.
