The copolyamide is based on a dimeric fatty acid (I), aliphatic dicarboxylic acid (II) and a polyamine component (III) consisting of a mixt. of aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amines or a mixt. of di- and tetra-functional cycloaliphatic polyamines. The amine component pref. contains piperazine hexahydrate (IIIa). The use of (IIIa) instead of anhydrous piperazine eliminates toxic and environmental pollution hazards and its lower m.pt. allows beter control of the reaction kinetics during polycondensn. The prods. have very good elasticity combined with good adhesive properties, thermal stability peel strength and tensile strength. Typically, (IIIa) is used in conjunction with 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamine and/or 98% ethylenediamine (IIIb). In an example, a copolyamide was prepd. from (I)(acid no. 195), adipic acid, (IIIa), (IIIb) and a small amt. of benzyldimethylamine.
