The depth control system may be used with a root crop harvester. A sensing element detects the ground level and transmits switch pulses to a control valve. A reflection light barrier switch (11) is used as the sensing element and is fixed via a holder or directly to frame sections which are moved commonly with the assembly to be controlled. By means of the adjustable holder, for example, the height and/or the angular position of the light barrier switch (11) with respect to the ground can be adjusted.
