Protector device for ultrasonic testing manipulator for reactor vessel - has impact detector mounted on flexible bar and actuating limit switches

A protective device for preventing a testing manipulator from striking other objects is intended particularly for ultrasonic manipulators used in testing reactor pressure vessel walls, duct connections, penetrations etc. in depth through the metal. The protective device comprises a limit switch mounted on the manipulator and an impact detector firmly mounted on one end of a flexible bar, the other end of the bar being firmly fixed to the manipulator. When the impact detector is deflected, the flexible bar is either bent or twisted. The bar pref. has a circular cross-section. The limit switch is conventionally constructed as a distance switch, a switching tongue associated with it being attached to the impact detector, so as to close the switch when the impact detector is moved on impact. The appts. for supporting the impact detector relative to the manipulator is a simple bar fixed at both ends. By comparison with previous equipment of this type, therefore, complicated and expensive seals, corrugated belows and the like are eliminated. Nevertheless, the bar always operates within its elastic range and therefore always restores the impact detector to its central neutral position after an impact, regardless of the direction or type of deflection which it has undergone.
