Wear resistant, composite cast beater for hammer mills - using wrought steel sheath for white alloy cast iron core

The beater is used esp. for crushing minerals, and consists of a white cast iron core which is at least partly surrounded on its working surfaces by a sheath of relatively soft and tough metal, esp. steel. Sheath may completely surround core, or consist of a steel tube with a welded baseplate and a top plate contg. a hole with area below 20% of the surface of the core; and hole is used to fill the sheath with cast iron. Iron pref. has compsn. by wt.: over 1% C, 0.5-5% Mn, 2-40% Cr, 0-10; Ni, 0-30% V, W, Mo, Ti, remainder iron. Provides a simple and inexpensive beater or hammer, where the sheath prevents the iron core from fracture; and the sheath can be used to anchor the beater in the mill.
