Treatment of soil with sulphonated petroleum - to prevent water permeation, for construction of reservoirs

Sulphonated petroleum (water-soluble oil) is used to treat soils capable of swelling, e.g. loam, clay etc. to produce water-impermeable layers after consolidation, e.g. by rolling. Used in construction of water reservoirs, dams, dikes, etc. and consolidation of banks, for collection and retention of water, esp. in deserts and steppers where cloudbursts occur. Transport costs are very small, only 4-8 kg. per 100m2 being required. No expert staff are required, and use is made of local materials and topographical features, e.g. loud depressions, wadis etc.
