The appliance is for surface work, esp. smooth cutting, of road embankments, esp. where there are guiderails. It has a beam (4) carrying the tool (6), borne on a vehicle (16) moving alongside the bank. This is fitted to move to and fro towards the bank, and the beam can pref. reach above the guiderail, assembly, while its groundworking tool takes up a position to engage below the rail assembly in its operative setting. The tool is pref. height-adjustably mounted at the rear part of the beam. This can work effectively to full width between guide rail posts.
