The sliding side door system, of a vehicle, consists of a vertical rear side panel (16) and a door (18), which is mounted to slide between a rear open position and a forward closed position. The side panel carries a horizontal rail (20), which guides the sliding guide element, which is carried by the rear edge (21) of the door. The rail is extended forward beyond the edge of the door frame (22), to the interior of the vehicle. A decorative mask (36) is fixed to the door such that in the closed position, it covers the incurving junction formed at the end of the rail.
