The impact absorbing mounting for the steering column has a tubular structure (3) supported at each side by the side frame of the car and spaced away from the dashboard in the middle section. The upper end of the telescopic steering column is braced on the support. The support provides progressive resistance to impact deformation, while axial forces on the steering column are accommodated by a damper (5) at the bottom of the column.
