The protective batten is for a grating screen in a bank, prison or other establishment subject to high security risks. The batten (1) has a protective layer (4) with increased period of resistance to mechanical, heat and/or chemical stresses compared with the grill itself (5), and is firmly connectable to the grill. This layer may be sprayed onto the batten. The protective layer can comprise ceramic material with a high melting point and abrupt state change - pref. aluminium oxide, chromium oxide, zirconium oxide or similar. This affords increased security against adhesive explosive charges, blowtorches and other weapons.
