The storage shelf system has two sets of storage compartments accessible from two opposite sides. Each is equipped with a loading and unloading machine with a lifting truck travelling vertically. Below the shelves and alongside each truck are a number of accommodation units, which can each be lowered independently for the maximum height of a stored unit below the level of the truck lifting platform. There can be an equal number of accommodation units on each side of the truck, and whose individual vertical movements are controlled by a central computer dependent on the desired loading or unloading sequence of the stored units.
