The bay has an operating linkage hinged to a gate which can pivot about a shaft near a side wall. When the door is closed, the movement of the animal upwards is limited by the linkage which also acts with a locking device. The operating linkage (28, 40, 46) consists of a longitudinal linkage (28, 38) which can pivot with respect to the longitudinal direction of the bay (10, 11, 12) in a combined motion with transverse and longitudinal components. The hinge point (26) for the rear end (32) of the longitudinal rod (28) is so arranged that when the gate is open, the hinge point is in the region of the bay side wall (14) containing the shaft (18). The short end (34) is connected with its support.
