New pharmaceutical prepns. for treating disorders of the gastrointestinal tract comprise a mixt. of (a) a pharmaceutically tolerable water-retaining carrier which is substantially non-absorbable and non-degradable in the gastro-intestinal tract and (b) pharmaceutically tolerable adsorbent. Used in treatment and prophylaxis (e.g., before surgery) of paralytic ileus. The adsorbent stimulates or maintains intestinal peristalsis, while the carrier ensures that the adsorbent does not cause constipations, so that the agent is eventually excreted with the faeces. The adsorbent prevents complications such as septic peritonitis, endotoxin shock and liver function disorders. The migration of endotoxin into systemic circulation is prevented.
