Heavy vehicle multiple ratio gearbox - has parallel shafts carrying multiple sliding gear pinions and sloping sided selector teeth

The gearbox for a heavy vehicle has a multiple gear change system giving reduced noise. The highest and lowest ratios are given by meshing pairs of gear wheels with a fixed gear wheel with fixed teeth. The latter are located at opposite ends of parallel shafts of the gearbox, and engage rotating and sliding gear wheels with selector teeth. Each gear change has a sliding fork which normally engages a drive pinion on another parallel shaft, also another pinion of another drive, on one of the first two parallel shafts. The selector teeth have sloping sides which increase in the relevant direction of rotation.
