The mechanism for monitoring and recording the receipt and issue of currency notes uses a reader equippes with a device for feeding the notes. A first conveying device (60) is combined with a second conveying device (61) so that a new note is not conveyed further until the preceding note has been read out and transported via a sorting branch (63). Data can be written into appropriate stores from the front or from behind seconding to the direction of approach of the notes.
