A material which is capable of lowering platelet count or fibrinogen concn. or both is isolated from spleen by extracting with a polar solvent of dielectric constant of =20 and then chromatographing the resulting soln. either by silica gel t.l.c. eluting with benzene or by glass column chromatography eluting with benzene or methanol. The material has an Rf value of 0-0.73 and a m.pt. is not 70 degrees C. The material is soluble in acetone, benzene and ether and can be extracted by these solvents. It can be separated into fractions TLC1, TLC 2A, TLC 2B and TLC 3. TLC1 and the dyes butter yellow sudan red 6 and indophenol blue when subjected to a 250 micron thick Analtech silica gel G.F plate using a benzene eluting solvent have Rf values of 0.66, 0.40, 0.17 and 0.05 respectively.
