Hydrazinium salts of 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid - useful as plant growth regulator, e.g. for dwarfing cereals

Hydrazinium salts of formula (I) are new: (R = H or CeCH2CH2 R1 = H and/or CH3. Specified cpds. have R = R1 = H; or R = H or CeCH2CH2 and R1 = CH3. They are made e.g. by reacting beta-chloroethylphosphonic acid with R12NNH2. (I) are plant growth regulators. They retard the growth of wheat and barley; induce defoliation of cotton; accelerate ripening of fruit, esp. apples, plums and grapes, with simultaneous increase in sugar and dry matter contents. (I) are much less toxic than 'Butiphos', e.g. LDso 1.6 kg c.f. 210 mg/kg.
