Halogenated polycyclic contaminants (I) of chlorinated phenols are removed by contacting (I), or materials contg. (I) with hydrazine-contg. compsns. The process allows the cleaning of laboratory appts. or plant contaminated by (I). (I), e.g. chlorinated derivs. of dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans, hydroxydiphenyl ethers and diphenyl ethers are decomposed. The treatment compsns. either contain water or water is added during treatment. Heating is advantageous. The treatment with water and hydrazine can take place at 20-120 degrees and may take 2-4 hrs. The activity of UV light, during or after treatment, accelerates decompsotion. Reaction is promoted by the opt. addn. of metal catalysts, calculated as 0.001-0.05 (0.005-0.02) wt.% metal w.r.t. hydrazine. Gp VIII metals and V, or their cpds., are pref.
