The load cell and overload protection device is esp. suitable for use in production presses. The anvil plate (10) of the press is not directly attached to the machine frame (1) but is connected to an adapter or spacer component (9). This spacer is attached to a striker plate (8) attached to the machine frame. The tool or die (5) is attached to the outer face of the anvil plate. The elastic, deformable adapter piece incorporates temperature-compensated strain-gauge elements (12) which measure the force (13) applied through the workpiece to the tool holder. If the applied force exceeds a certain figure, the gap (11) between both parts of the striker plate is closed and the force is distributed over the whole of the face plate attached to the machine frame.
