A method for the preparation of block polymers or / and graft polymers of alkenes and vinyl monomers

Azonitriles of formula (I) are new:- In the formulae, Y is COOH (or ester)gp.), NCO or halogenoformyl; Z is H or as for Y; m;n;p and q are 0 or 1-12 so that (m+n) and (p+q) are 2-12, and n is 0. (I) are used for the prepn. of block and/or grafted copolymers of alkenes and vinyl monomers by reacting an alkene polymer contg. OH gps. in terminal positions and/or distributed along the chain with (I) at 80-150 degrees C in inert solvent and then contacting the reaction prod. with vinyl monomers at 80-200 degrees C to effect polymsn. by means of free radical generated by the reaction prod. The copolymers obtd. are very homogeneous and uncontaminated by homopolymers.
