Low pressure fluorescent electric discharge lamp - uses tube contg. at least one copper halide with strong ultraviolet emission

The discharge tube pref. contains 0.1-0.5 mg/cm3 of CuCl, plus a noble gas or gases at 2-12 torr; and the lamp operates at 200-400 degrees C. The discharge tube is pref. made of material transparent to UV light, and is located inside an outer bulb which has an internal coating of a luminophore, thus producing a fluorescent lamp. Alternatively, the luminophore coating may be applied to the external surface of the discharge tube which is located in a bulb coated internally with a layer reflecting infrared light. Although the lamp may be used as a source of UV light, it is employed esp. as a fluorescent lamp, in which a luminophore converts the UV to visible light.
