Hydrocarbon-soluble metal-contg. compsns. are prepd. from a mixt. of (a) Ba, Pb, Co, Ni and/or Mn in the form of the free metal, oxide, hydroxide, acetate or carbonate, (b) at least one =5C fatty acid, alkoxy- or phenoxy-fatty acid, ether- or thioether-monocarboxylic acid, tall-oil fatty acid or hexahydrobenzoic acid, and (c) at least one glycol (ether) of formula R(OR')x(R"OH)y(O)zR'"n OH (I) (where R is H or 1-10C alkyl; R' and R" are 1-10C alkylene; R'" is 1-4C alkylene; x = 1-4; y = 0 or 1; z = 0 or 1; n = 0 or 1), in which the metal/acid equiv. ratio is =1.0 (or 1.5 in the case of Pb) and the metal (I) equiv. ratio is =0.5 (pref. ca. 0.5), by heating at 65-143 degrees C until the mixt. is water-free and then filtering. The compsns. are esp. useful as sicatives for paints, varnishes, inks and other coating compsns., and can also be used as fuel additives. The process gives stable, low viscosity products which are completely miscible with linseed oil and completely soluble in mineral spirits; high metal/acid ratios (and thus negative acid nos.) can be obtained.
