A zinc alkaline electric battery has its negative electrode plate made of a material contg. small particles of zinc, 0.1-10 wt. % zinc oxide, alkaline electrolyte, 0.05-10 wt. % gelling material, and 0.1-20 wt. % inorganic oxide or hydroxide. The inorganic oxide or hydroxide may be a mixture of two or more inorganic oxides or hydroxides. The metal of the inorganic oxide or hydroxide may be barium, titanium, aluminium or zirconium, or a mixture of at least two of these metals. The gelling material is a metal salt of polyacrylic acid. The various materials are mixed to obtain a paste. The paste is used with a porous material sheet and a separating sheet to make up the negative electrode plate.
