The brake overcomes the difficulty that the brake shoe (or block holder) can tend to turn as the brake is applied. The block (10) is made from friction material and the shoe element (11) is fixed to it. The end of the shoe element is surrounded by friction material and there is a stud or projecting support (12) for fixing to the brake mechanism. The shoe element is partly or wholly embedded in the friction material. The stud (12) and the brake shoe element are fixed rigidly together. The brake shoe element has U shaped, V shaped, semi circular or flat cross section. The stud locates in the base of the U section and the element is glued to the brake lining material.
