The protective helmet or face mask use in sports practice conforms approximately to the shape of the wearer's head and is capable of absorbing impact energy. The face mask comprises an elastic element which is formed of an expanded material, the elastic element being enclosed in a pliable envelope. The mask is provided with openings which follow the shape of the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth of the user, further openings being provided at the temples, cheeks and chin. The rear of the mask is open and is provided with a member which protects the nape of the neck and retains the mask in position.
