A pyrotechnical charge has at least one zone of its gas generating surface coated with a material which inhibits combustion and is destroyed by the thermodynamic conditions created during the initial stages of combustion. The inhibiting cladding may be destroyed at the end of a combustion period which is less than 50% of the total duration of combustion, and it covers an area of the charge less than 60% of the gas generating surface. The coating is relatively thin and is broken down by the thermodynamic conditions prevailing in its proximity after ignition. It may however also include an inhibitant which is fully capable of withstanding the ambient thermodynamic conditions after ignition, is a good conductor of heat, and is sufficiently thin to be destroyed when the propellant beneath it is ignited. Prevents an initial excess of gas pressure and premature ignition of the mass of the charge. The initial combustion surface is limited so that the volume of gas generated is restricted temporarily without the subsequent course of the combustion being affected particularly. A high coefficient of loading can thus be achieved.
