The exchanger for cooling partic. compressed air, has the cooling coil or bundle welded to a wall of the exchanger. This wall is also the wall of a chamber which contains a liq. e.g. water, to absorb any excessive cooling. Typically, the exchanger incorporates two annular concentric chambers. The gas to be cooled flows downwards through the outer chamber, over the cooling coil which is welded to the inner wall of this chamber. The inner annular chamber is filled with water. The cooled gas then flows to an annular gas outlet passage between the chamber filled with water and an internal wall concentric with it. The flow space between the chamber and the gas passage contains a pad of fibre or compressed wire gauge, and there are holes in the bottom of the outlet passage to allow water, condensed during cooling, to be run out. The water in the inner annular chanber absorbs excess cooling and prevents the coil being covered with frost formed from the water in the gas being cooled. The water in the inner chamber stores this cold and returns it to the system when necessary, e.g. during stoppage of the refrigerating machine. The cooled air therefore leaves the appts. at a constant temp. during the periods of operation and stoppage.
