The pads for vehicle disc brakes are shaped in such a way as to eliminate brake squeal. The pads (6) are supported on a metallic base (7), and the long edges are circular arcs centred on the disc axis. The inner arc (11) is chamfered (10) to about half the depth of the pad tapering gradually from the leading edge. The chamfering faces in the direction of rotation of the disc corresponding to forward motion of the vehicle. For best results, the shoulder (12) of the chamfer is also a circular arc centred on the disc axis, and the initial chamfering reduces the friction surface by about 20%.
