Method of controlling the cooling of hot worked rolled steel esp. steel contg. 0.4% carbon comprises cooling first directly to the perlite transformation point at a speed close to that which forms bainite, detecting the start of the transformation, comparing the value with reference values to ensure that the transformation has commenced in the ferrite perlite region, applying a supplementary cooling during the transformation to reduce the effect of recalescence, then bringing the temp. to the cooling temp. Wire suitable for wire drawing can be obtd. with mechanical properties similar to those produced by patenting much more cheaply and giving homogeneous structures.
