Light wt. concrete contg. expanded aggregate and phenolic resin foam - giving flameproof mouldings with good mechanical properties

A construction material is produced by charging a mould, contg. expanded aggregate, with a compsn. contg. (a) 100 pts. wt. of phenolic resin with 60-90 wt. % dry extract and a molar ratio HCHO:phenol of 1-3 (1.2-1.8); (b) 5-30 pts. wt. of an acid catalyst; (c) 30-80 pts. wt. of CaSO4, opt. hydrated, of particle size 1 mm (100 u); and (d) 0-8 pts. wt. of a chlorinated or chlorofluorinated hydrocarbon, or an alkali(ne earth) or ammonium (bi)carbonate as blowing agent. Concrete is used for constructional panels, plates, beams and blocks. The aggregates include expanded clay or expanded glass. Resins from mono- or bi-phenols may be used. Pref. catalysts are aromatic sulphonic acids. Naturals plaster is pref. no blowing agent is then needed.
