The following investigation was conducted to determine the mechanical properties of rubberized lightweight aggregate concrete developed by replacing lightweight mineral aggregate with recycled ground rubber of comparable size. The replacement ratios used ranged from 0%--100% using 20% intervals and were measured by volume replacement. Three different tests were conducted in accordance with standards set forth by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) in order to determine the mechanical properties of the material. These tests included the Standard Test Method for Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens, Standard Test Method for Splitting Tensile Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens, and Standard Test Method for Flexural Strength of Concrete. In addition to these tests, an impact flexural test was carried out using a falling weight in order to investigate the material's response to dynamic loading. The material properties determined for each replacement ratio include compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural toughness, and material response to impact loading. As a general trend, mechanical properties decreased as rubber content increased. However, specimens with higher rubber contents experienced a greater ability to sustain load once peak loading was reached.
