The upholstering machine has a store of tacks and a reciprocating plunger with a precision positioning sleeve for the tacks, which are fed to it one by one. A tool is mounted below the plunger (16), and has a punch which cuts out anchoring pieces from a strip of suitable material. There is also a die distorting the point of the tack into a hook which secures each anchoring piece. A mechanical drive synchronises movements of plunger and tool, and also that of the strip from which the anchoring pieces are cut. The punch and die can be formed by the concave face of a reciprocating piston rod synchronised with the plunger.
