Charging preheated coal into a coke oven - by starting and finishing the operation at much lower speeds

In an improved technique for charging a coking oven with preheated coal by means of a hopper and a rotary distributor such as a honecomb screen or a worm at the bottom of the hopper, the speed of rotation of the rotary distributor is reduced relatively to its normal speed, at the start and at the finish of charging. At the commencement of charging, the speed of rotation is reduced to two to four times less than the normal running speed, and is then raised gradually to the full speed until a few seconds before the conclusion when it is reduced again. Method prevents the considerable increase in pressure in the retort system at the start and finish of charging in the conventional manner, which may lift the plugs and the valve opening the distillation duct to atmosphere releasing tar laden gases.
