The hydraulic press, suitable for china plates with fixed end members (1, 2) carrying guide rods (3, 4) between them for the sliding members, as in the main patent, has a sliding cross head (7) pushed by a piston (6) mounted on one end member (1) carrying one mould half (8). Between this and the other end member (2) carrying the second mould half (9) is a matrix (10) around the mould halves. The matrix is supported on rods (13, 14) attached to a piston (14) behind the second end member (2). Another pair of pressure operated ros (16, 17) pushes the crosshead (7) from one end, and a short pair (20, 21) and a long pair (18, 19) of rods act on the other side. A hydraulic compressor (30) acts through a system of valves (26, 27, 28, 36, 45, 53) to operate all these pistons and rods sequentially. These valves are electromagnetically operated. Included in the hydraulic circuit is an electric pump (31) an oil tank (32) and a hydraulic vessel (33).
