Enriching and solubilising phosphate in steel furnace slags - by addn. of partially or totally disintegrated phosphate(s) or mixts. of calcined phosphate, to the molten slag to give improved fertilis
Phosphorus deposits, in the form of partially or totally disintegrated phosphate or the usual mixts. of the prodn. of calcined phosphate, are added to the molten or very hot slags, so as to enrich the slag in phosphoric acid and at the same time convert insoluble phosphorus cpds. into soluble forms, which are assimilable by plants. Used for enrichment of steel furnace slags with plant assimilable phosphorus cpds. and solubilisation of phosphorus cpds. in the slags in order to produce a Thomas fertiliser or slag fertiliser in which 80-95% of the total P2O5 is soluble in 2% citric acid. The process enriches Thomas slag to give a concentration of 15% soluble P2O5 and enriches slag from phosphorus-poor iron it give 3% soluble P2O5.
