The anode (10) is carried by an anode tube (12). In order to reduce stray radiation and the effect of external magnetic fields on the beam geometry the anode tube is made from an electrically conducting element of low atomic number e.g. aluminium or carbon, or is coated internally with such an element at least in the vicinity of the window (5). To further reduce the effect of external fields the part (13) of the anode tube (12) facing the cathode (7) and the cathode screen (9) may consists of ferromagnetic material. The target portion (11) may consist of rhodium.
