The retaining wall for river or canal banks comprises a line of vertical piles (1) with cladding (2) to the rear. The piles may be driven at uniform or variable centres and form the main structural element. A capping plate (5) may be used to unite the heads of the piles (1) and locating a coping section (4) of cladding. Horizontal joints between cladding panels (2) may be effected by an interlocking of 'U' section edge returns (3). The panels (2) may be made by profiling or bending and may have a nominally undulating section. The vertical joints between panels (2) may locate behind piles (1).
