The flushing system for water closets has a tank (1) with a partition (8) enabling two or more alternative quantities of water to be deposited in the pan. The system is otherwise of the conventional type, releasing relatively large quantities of water to the pan, and automatically refilling once the flush has occurred. The alternative flushes release small or large quantities of water for economies in water consumption. The tank may be divided into two (6, 7) with a separate flushing mechanism (19, 21) for each compartment. The water level in the tank may be controlled by a ball cock (13-17) which opens to admit supply water when the tank is empty, and closes when the water level attains a predetermined level (9). This level may be above that of the top edge (22) of the partition (8) so that the ball cock can serve both compartments (6, 7).
