The automatic liquid rheostat is for motor starters. The rheostat is of the variable level type and overcomes problems associated with time constant and lack of even progression through the start-up. The electrolyte level is altered by use of a pump working from a reservoir which is positioned beneath the rheostat tank proper. Both tanks are sealed, a breather pipe extending from a high point in the upper tank to a similar position in the reservoir. Three triangular rheostat electrodes immersed partially in the electrolyte are connected to the phase lines via bulk - head connectors in the rheostat tank cover.
