Treatment of concrete before impregnation with resin - to improve its mechanical properties and reduce water permeability

Concrete, after setting is pretreated before its impregnation with resin or its coating by a paint film. The pretreatment consists of impregnating the concrete with an aq. soln. of a cpd., e.g. a phenol, contg. =1 mobile acid H atom capable of displacing the Ca of the free lime contained in the concrete without decompsn. of the granules or CaCO3 essentially used in making the concrete. The pre-impregnated concrete has a greater capacity for penetration of a resin into the concrete, its permeability to liq. water is reduced, and its mechanical properties are improved.
