The continuous cigarette filter rod making machine deposits lengths of two sorts of filter material in sequence onto a continuous wrapping strip (39) as it is conveyed forwards. The strip then encloses the composite filter rod and it then passes through a cutting unit (47). The filter pieces are fed from two hoppers (3, 4) onto a depositing wheel (33) above the strip. The depositing wheel and cutter each have a sequencing device which passes timing signals to an electronic system which controls the speed of the motor (59) driving them. These signals are passed to an equaliser which monitors their phase length, followed by a counter whose output controls the motor.
