Stone vase with flat base, and cylindrical perpendicular cavity - is cut from natural pebble, using rotating tool to make groove for metal cylinder

The stone vase is made from a pebble from a river or such like, and comprises a flat end (4), and a recessed cylindrical hole on the side opposite the flat end (4), and with its axis at right angles to the flat surface (4). The bottom of the hole is parallel to the plane of the flat surface (4). The operation first consists of wedging the stone (1) and cutting the top of it to form the flat base (4). The stone is then turned over, and a rotating cutting tool is used to excavate the circular centre of the stone. A core (7) is then cut which is then removed to leave the cavity.
