Provided is an apparatus for the development of biological material from a suitable nutrient load, wherein the volume of the biological material can be precisely adjusted. /P P This adjustment is made by using, to support the biological material, a structure formed of one or more bodies 14 which each have an empty part inside, the development of the biological material taking place in this empty part and the excess growth outside the bodies being limited. This excess growth is limited by removing the material which is released from the bodies due to their colliding. The invention applies in particular to various biological fermentation processes, as well as to the purification of wastewater and industrial effluents.
