A safety hook (12) is used for a crane or lifting tackle. The tip (13) of the hook has two stepped notches (18, 19). There is a swivelling safety tongue (16) and this engages in the lower notch (18) for a normal load. It can be held by the other notch should the hook become deformed due to overloading. Each notch is designed and positioned so that the foot of the tongue butts flatly against the full height of the face of the notch which serves as a stop for the tongue. The hook has the usual eye (10) for a rope (11).
