The high-capacity parcel sorting conveyor allows the parcels to be deflected sideways by fingers sliding across the supporting surface. The fingers (6) are independent of each other and bear against internal guide rails. They are diverted at the desired positions by sets of points, which deflect a sufficient number to ensure each parcel is thrust clear at the desired point. The supporting surface can be formed by cross-members between two side chains, between which the deflecting fingers slide or roll. The points can be actuated by pneumatic rams, under the control of pneumatic detectors. The latter are actuated by cams on the fingers or cross-members, and whose positions memorise the discharge poins of all parcels near them over the whole conveyor length.
