The two stage pressing process is used to form fittings for spindle type ornamental furniture hinges, the finished fitting presenting co-axial cylindrical body and axle lengths bounded by a radial shoulder. A length of cylindrical bar is placed in a vertical tubular die, resting on a shoulder formed by a radial step in the bore. An axial punch then drops through the larger opening to transform the bar into a cup on an axial stalk. The piece is then placed with its head projecting from a second die, a second tubular punch with a conical mouth descends to complete the operation.
