Cold rolling system of metal strip applies hot rolled strip with adhering scale to a cold rolling mill section with a certain reduction ratio. This ratio is designed to break and strip more scale along the two edges than in the centre, resulting in an even scale distribution over the width. The broken scale is removed from the strip surface by mechanical jet cleaning. Pickling is not required; process ensures that a strip of uniform surface offers a good base for a metal or paint coating.
